THE HEBREW HAMMER STAR, ADAM GOLDBERG, NOW ATTACHED TO STAR IN SEQUEL THIS YEAR
Goldberg agrees to star in the film, “Hammer vs Hitler” and is excited about working with writer and director Jonathan Kesselman again, 10 years after the first movie.
January 8, 2013, Brooklyn, NY – Star of the Jewxploitation cult classic ‘The Hebrew Hammer’, Adam Goldberg, has agreed in principle to star in the sequel to the comedy, ‘Hammer vs Hitler’ and has spoken about the upcoming movie.
“It didn’t seem the sort of franchise where you wouldn’t want to see him take on one Jewish holiday after another,” Goldberg told The Hollywood Reporter, published today. “You want to see him go after the big one. Who’s the Jewish Joker? Hitler.”
Goldberg was excited to have been working with Writer and Director of both movies, Jonathan Kesselman, on the project. “It’s implicit that if we are going to take on Hitler,” he said, “there’s a time-travel element. So, once that widened the scope infinitely, I thought it was important that we hook up with the other big Jew in history – Jesus.”
Part of the attraction to the role was the sharp-edged, cult figure that the lead role portrays, which is in contrast to the cultural Jewish figures in the media, Goldberg says, adding that there is a certain degree of “cultural complacency” about that in the media, where the “Jew we’ve come to feel comfortable with (there) is very cuddly”.It is nearly 10 years since the cult classic ‘The Hebrew Hammer’ premiered, causing controversy and hilarity for a decade. It’s even more controversial sequel will begin filming this spring after an innovative crowdfunding campaign brought in thousands of dollars in its first few weeks. The original, 2003, Hebrew Hammer was a cult ‘Jewxsploitation’ hit, which played on 70′s Blaxploitation film stereotypes, pushed racial and cultural buttons, and made a significant impact on Jewish culture, encouraging Jewish empowerment.
In the new film, the Hebrew Hammer is now married and enjoying the good life in suburbia, but is forced to dust off his black leather couture to confront a new menace: A time-traveling Hitler, intent on altering key moments in Jewish history, to the detriment of the Jews. When Hitler gets his hands on Time Sukkah technology that enables him to change the course of history, it’s up to the Hammer and his cohorts to follow Hitler through Jewish history to rewrite his wrongs.
The outpouring of support from fans across the world has meant that the original cult movie, that launched at Sundance and had limited theatrical release before being picked up by Comedy Central in a five-year deal, and was voted one of the top all-time holiday movies by both Vanity Fair and the Boston Globe, has meant that the sequel, titled ‘The Hebrew Hammer vs Hitler’, is expected to begin filming in May 2013.
“It’s been amazing,” said Filmmaker Jonathan Kesselman, who is the writer and director of both movies. “The fans are making this happen. The cult status of the first movie attracted millions of fans around the world, making crowdfunding a viable option. Funding is now in the hands of fans who can help make the movies they want to see.”
The ‘Hammer VS Hitler’ campaign began raising funds on crowdfunding platform, Jewcer, just two weeks ago, with nearly $35,000 raised in the first few days. The campaign hopes to raise $200,000 by the end of January 2013, although because of the momentum of the campaign, several key investors have already begun pledging support to make the movie happen.
The campaign to get the ‘Hammer VS Hitler’ movie made began after Kesselman recently secured the rights from ContentFilm. On securing the rights to the movie, Kesselman said: “I always saw the Hebrew Hammer as a franchise. I never felt the original was handled properly in its distribution and the unwavering fan support over the last 10 years has prompted me to give the world what it has desperately, even pathetically, grovelled for. For G-d’s sake world, get off your damned knees already!?”
Kesselman negotiated for the rights of the sequel with John Schmidt at ContentFilm. The new movie has a projected budget of $2million. A crowdfunding campaign is underway at www.Jewcer.com, and contributions from investors are being negotiated. After a near-decade-long tug-of-war over the rights, and several attempts at getting it made, Kesselman finally feels the film is on track to being made next year, with filming expected to begin in May 2013.
ABOUT THE HEBREW HAMMER FRANCHISE
The Jewxploitation franchise, which plays on 70′s Blaxploitation film stereotypes, pushed racial and cultural buttons and made a significant impact on Jewish culture, embracing Jewish empowerment and street-Shabbat Shalom savvy. In the new film, The Hebrew Hammer is now married and enjoying the good life in suburbia. But the Hammer is forced to dust off his pimpy, black leather couture to confront a new menace: A time-traveling Hitler, intent on altering key moments in Jewish history, to the detriment of the Jews.
The original film, which was made for $1.3million, premiered at Sundance and had a limited theatrical release. Comedy Central paid $0.5million for TV rights for 5 years and it was seen by millions on TV in the United States and was broadcast in 13 foreign territories, distributed by Strand Releasing. In the original movie, the Hebrew Hammer, played by Adam Goldberg, is on a mission to rescue Hanukkah after Santa Claus’s son, played by Andy Dick, takes control of it. Vanity Fair, Boston Globe, and Time Magazine have all chosen it for their favorite holiday movie lists. The original Hebrew Hammer movie was listed by Vanity Fair and the Boston Globe as one of the all-time top holiday movies and Time magazine cited its villain as one of the all-time top ten “Bad Santas”. The Jewish magazine, Moment, polled Jewish movie critics from across the country and included it as one of the “hundred most influential films in the history of Jewish cinema”.
ABOUT THE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN
Movie creator Jonathan Kesselman has said that the sequel to his cult-status movie The Hebrew Hammer will be made next year because of the unfailing support of its millions of fans across the world. A funding campaign for The Hebrew Hammer VS Hitler is currently underway at www.Jewcer.com, and fans of the original movie are contributing to fund the sequel.
“What’s happened with digital music is also happening with movies. No one knows how to monetize independent movies anymore because of digital piracy. Nobody is making independent movies anymore and that has had an impact on the quality of Hollywood and on that of independent films,” says Kesselman. “The fans are making this happen. The cult status of the first movie attracted millions of fans around the world, making crowdfunding a viable option. Although a decade ago, the first movie was funded by an independent financier, the current state of the independent film business has changed. Funding is now in the hands of fans who can help make the movies they want to see.”
